HARMONY & BALANCE
In these days of social media, viewing only the tidiest and most curated pieces of others’ lives, we inherit a certain distortion of reality… an expectation of perfection. This has extended into the world of interiors as well. So strong is our desire for perfection that our homes have become pared back to the point of listlessness, for fear that we may hang a piece of art or paint our walls a color that invites dissatisfaction from the viewers of our homes. The issue with perfection, you see, is that even if it were possible to achieve, the result would be quite boring. Isn’t it the little things, those tiny irregularities, that distinguish our favorite beings? Our best friend who snorts when she laughs, the specks of green in the golden eyes of our beloved, or the puppy who tugs at our heartstrings as he makes his way happily through the world on just three legs. The true magic of being alive lies within these details.
It is with all of this in mind that I approach the design of a home. Human beings are colorful, complex, and changing constantly. Our dwellings should reflect not what is trending, but what is within our hearts. The quality of our inner worlds should be evident upon entrance. Often a prospective client will call because they possess an affinity for many different styles, and they see this as a flaw! This is something to celebrate! Styles are nothing more than guidelines, meant to offer direction and inspiration rather than a set of rules to be followed.
So instead of setting out to perfection, we will aim for harmony, and balance. There is room for all of you within those walls, it is just a matter of how exactly to express it. When it comes to this, I look to nature. She is far from perfect, with lopsided trees and bumpy landscapes and weeds growing wild - but she is always balanced. Every element in our natural world supports a vast network of others, just as every element in your home should. Perfection may not be achievable, but harmony and balance most certainly are.
