Inspiration | Dreamy Spaces

Hi everyone! Somehow the summer is already coming to a close… I mean, how is it already a third of the way through August? If you’re anything like me (which you probably are, otherwise I’m not sure you’d be reading this blog) you’ve been listening to Taylor Swift’s Folkore and Evermore on repeat while dealing with your weird emotions about the passage of time, and trying not to get too excited for the cooler weather.

Despite the fact that any temperature over 70 degrees has me dripping sweat, I’ve promised myself this year to find things I enjoyed about summer. Here’s what I’ve come up with:

-Dusk. Specifically dusk when you’ve spent most of the day in crazy heat and the sun has finally peaced-out, leaving everything glowing a soft shade of purply-pink and the sweet memories of a day well spent are as fresh in your mind as the flowers growing by the side of the road.

-Vacation. I spent nearly a week away with my family-by-law (19 of us in total… yes, that’s immediate family only) and left feeling so thankful for my bonds by marriage. Getting a built in second family is pretty damn cool. Watching all of the kiddos grow up before my eyes is really something special. It’s one of those things where you know in the very moment that you’ll treasure those memories for the rest of your life.

-Water. Fellow water signs raise your hands! I love winter, but I don’t get to spend any time by flowing, moving water. There is nothing more rejuvenating to me.

-Random cool days. How damn refreshing is it after a heat wave when you have a normal, if not kind of chilly, summer day?

-Moody days. Besides fall, summer has the best moody, stormy days. The way the dark grey skies look against the saturated green trees? Pure. Soul. Magic.

These wistful end of summer feelings have me digging deep into sources of inspiration. Specifically images, places, and spaces that encompass that almost heavy, dreamy feeling I associate with August.

This one is all about the details. That stone ~swoop~, the light pouring in, the glimpse into the room down the hall… sigh.

I mean, just wow. Circles (especially as doorways) have so much meaning, and are so beautifully soothing. And just look at that reflection.

This one reminds me of lazy strolls through local museums… if you’re from the New England or New York area you know exactly what I’m talking about. Those little historic homes that get turned into a museum, with the creaky floors and the smell of a good story.

Ready to be completely in awe? This is a dollhouse. This wonderfully talented human makes miniature homescapes. Her sense of scale and proportion is incredible. This is such a minimalist dream.

If you’re not following Athena Calderone (@eyeswoon) on Insta, best get over there now. She is an aesthetic icon. Her own NYC home is astounding, but this photo she shared just hit me. It reminded me of sticky nights out in the city, drinking with my besties without a single care in the world. Well, besides making the last train home before they started coming in 2 hours intervals.

The word that comes to mind for me here is romance. Maybe it’s because I find aged shiplap and books to be just about the most romantic things. I envision a salty summer spent here, swept away in stories and losing track of the days.

Until next time,

Nicki

Even though this picture was taken in the spring, it’s giving early fall for me. I can’t wait to be out leaf peeping in my sweaters.
