The Secret to Interior Design

Beware: this is just my opinion. I imagine many designers out there would fervently disagree with me. It’s a hot take, but one that deserves attention. Raise your hand if you agree:

The secret to interior design is accepting that it’s never going to be perfect.

Is that what you expected, even wanted, to hear from a professional designer? Probably not. So why risk upsetting so many people? Because we’re already upset. Designers are upset that clients are choosing and buying items that don’t fit their image of how things should be. They’re upset that the item they specified six months ago is now unavailable, and the whole composition is disrupted because of it. Homeowners are upset that a paint color they thought was the right one looked all wrong once it was on the walls. The curtains don’t look right. The sofa seems a little too big for the room. There are always going to be problems. We unfortunately do not have any control over that. We do, however, have complete control over how we react to them when they arise.

We can let it ruin our day, our week, our whole project. We can use it as an excuse to no longer show up for our clients and our homes. Or, we can throw our hands in the air and say, “F it, it’s never going to be perfect”, and carry on with our merry little lives. Heck, you might even be surprised to learn that the new, messed up version is better than the one you envisioned. Or maybe it isn’t, because life isn’t always as good as we dream it to be.

And that is okay.

Keep on keeping on. Don’t let some very human mistakes stop you from experimenting, exploring, and creating.

Until next time,

Nicki
