10 Decor Pieces Under $40

I preach passionately and often about the necessity of sustainable design and slow fashion… it is more important now than ever before that we do our part to take care of the environment. This starts with understanding your own personal impact on the environment (find out what your carbon footprint is here). One of the simplest ways to reduce your footprint is to be a conscious consumer - find out where your goods are coming from, how they got to you, and who made them.

If you’re interested in learning more, or want to get excited about sustainability in your life and don’t know where to start, The Good Trade is an exhaustive online resource that covers almost everything you could possibly need. I use it consistently to supplement my own knowledge of sustainability and stay up to date. They also have amazing shopping guides that have helped me find a lot of my favorite stores.

THAT SAID, buying new sustainable/slow items is expensive. I’m talking 4-5x the cost of it’s fast counterparts, or more. The increased cost personally helps me reduce my consumption, but it can be completely exhausting at times to feel like I can’t afford anything. I begin to feel like I have a choice between buying an affordable, fast item and going against my moral and societal beliefs, or to simply go without that item because I can’t afford it. This is an example of all-or-nothing thinking, and that is no friend of a sustainable lifestyle.

We have to go easy on ourselves sometimes. A sustainable lifestyle also has to be accessible, or it will not succeed. And that’s why I compiled this list today. I have lived in my home for 2 years. I’m an interior designer. And until last month, I hadn’t really decorated anything. It was hurting my soul and my creativity. I find what I can from vintage shops and Facebook Marketplace, but in trying to further develop my brand and style, that simply wasn’t enough.

Ethics and the health of our planet aside, I will not buy something cheap if it looks cheap. Just ain’t my thing. So here are 10 quality decor pieces under $40 that will transform your space and fuel your creativity.

PS: About 90% of these things are from the McGee & Co x Threshold line at Target. It’s honestly amazing and it makes me really excited that beautiful decor and furniture can be more accessible. It does feature some recycled material, so that’s cool.
